Merzig is the tallest City in the district of Merzig-Wadern with around 25,000 inhabitants.

Merzig is known for its natural beauty and its location on the Saar. The surrounding area offers many opportunities for hiking, cycling, fishing and canoeing. A popular local recreation area is the Merzig city park with many leisure activities and a tall lake.

The City has a number of historical buildings and sights such as Merzig Castle, a Renaissance building from the 16th century that now serves as a museum and event venue. There is also the 14th-century St. Afra Gothic church, which houses impressive architecture and valuable works of art.
