Altenburg is a city in eastern Germany and the capital of the state of Thuringia. It has about 42,000 inhabitants and an area of about 51 square kilometers.
Altenburg has a long and eventful history dating back to the Middle Ages.

In the Middle Ages it was an important trading town and in the 15th century it was the residence town of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg. In the 16th century it was a center of the Reformation in Germany and was the hometown of Melanchthon, an important reformer. In the 19th century, the textile industry developed into one of the city's most important economic powers.

Today, Altenburg is a lively and historic town with many sights and cultural attractions. There are a number of historic buildings, including Altenburg Castle, the Town Church of St. Afra and the Old Town Hall. There are several museums, theaters and galleries in the town, as well as an active music scene. Altenburg is also a popular base for hiking and outdoor activities in the area, and there are good connections to other cities in the region as well as Leipzig and Berlin.
